• Garbage collection in MRI Ruby is getting replaced to (Generational Garbage Collection) from the original Mark and Sweep GC. This change will help deployment of Ruby in large scale systems. This change will be seen in Ruby v2.1. Link.
• "Don't forget to Talk" article throws light on importance of having healthy conversations at office. He goes on to explain the creative process which is involved in a healthy conversation. So "Don't forget to Talk". Link.

First day @Sourcebits

Friday, the 6th of July was my first day at my first job. I joined a firm known as Sourcebits which is an expert in design and development of mobile and web applications.

This blog post is about my experience on my First day @Sourcebits.

I was very excited about my First day at my First job due to which I could not sleep properly the previous night. Woke up early at 6:00 am and completed my daily morning chores. Got ready with all the documents required, left the RVCE hostel at around 7:00am to go to electronic city (where the company is located). Got a bus to Electronic city at 7:10am, I boarded the bus thinking it might take 2 hours to reach the company. I had to report at 10:00am. But I reached the electronic city at 8:30am( 1 and half hours earlier as I usually do). I had breakfast in front of the company and thought of moving into the company at around 9:00am. I saw another new recruit too moving into the company campus (Located at Salarpuria Infozone). We met each other and headed straight to the second floor where the company operates. We sat on the couch of the waiting room,then we saw new recruits coming in. We met each other and headed towards the conference room where the Induction program was to be conducted.

As we gathered inside the conference room, the HR's visited and provided some forms to fill. We filled the forms and submitted some of the documents to the company. The HR informed us to have lunch as the Induction program was about to start at 2:00pm. We had a nice glance of the company and the cafeteria ,the ambiance of the company was very good.

We waited and waited and waited for the Induction program to start which finally got started around 3:30pm. First we were greeted by the Financial team which explained the complete structure of our salary and income tax benefits etc. Then the Quality team visited us which did gave a very nice presentation of the "Importance of process inside a Company" and how process helps in increasing the quality of products by the company. Then we had a presentation on "How to protect the Confidential IP's of the company". We were then introduced to the ISMS system inside the company.  (which is a security management system) ,Then we were visited by the admin who introduced us to Transportation facilities, the access card stuff etc.

Finally at around 5:45pm we were greeted by two HR's of the company, who gave us a brief introduction about the company, the benefits etc. 

Office Timings : 10:00am - 6:00pm or 11:00am - 7:00pm

I got a bus to Kengeri at around 7:10pm. I reached hostel at 9:00pm.

Overall the day was awesome. Met some awesome new friends. Interacted with the staff at the company. Had a corporate feeling for the first time in life.

Our training will be for 5 weeks starting from Monday, the 9th of July :)

Looking forward for an awesome learning experience at Sourcebits.

Update Friday 27/01/2012

Updates :

• Scored 9.15/10 ( GPA ) in my 7th Semester of Engineering. Feeling great and Happy.
• Enjoying Holidays at home in Gulbarga (Native Place). Going back to Bangalore on 30th of January 2012.
• Celebrated my 21st Birthday at Hyderabad with Brother and Parents on 23rd January 2012. Got a 1TB Hard disk as a gift :).
• Contributing to Mozilla Web QA Community from Dec 2011- Present.
• Updated my Resume after a long time. http://goo.gl/UXyjp .Thanks to Matt Brandt for useful edits and suggestions.
• Participated in Mozilla Doc sprint from 19-22nd January and Contributed to the Mozilla Docs at Mozilla Developer networks. (HTML5 and SVG code snippets) .

OSI 2011

I attended the Open Source India conference 2011 held here in Bangalore at Nimhans Convention centre from 20-22 Nov with Smit shah and Shiva Shankar

          Things I learnt at the conference are :

1. Cross Browser Application Development by Microsoft : This talk was all about developing cross browser web applications. He introduced the concept of feature detection .He even walked us through an Open source Javascript Library Modernizr used to bring the HTML5 and CSS3 features to the older browsers. By incorporating the Modernizr libraries while designing web applications one can parse the HTML5 and CSS3 rich websites even in older browsers (IE6,7,8).He gave an introduction to Polyfills and shims. Polyfills and shims are basically used to introduce new standards in older browsers . For more info : http://www.blogorama.nerdworks.in
2. Vmware Cloud Foundry by VMware : A new open source Platform as a service by VMware is Cloud Foundry. In this talk we were introduced with various aspects of Developing applications with various frameworks (Specially Spring) and deploying it on to the Cloud foundry. We were even introduced with the concept of Micro cloud ( cloud environment simulation in USB stick ).You can create instances and actually simulate the complete Cloud environment in your Local system before deploying your web applcation on to cloud foundry.
3. Defending Front-end by Yahoo!: This talk was all about securing your web applications against various types of attacks on the web.He talked about various types of attacks such as SQL Injection , Cross Side Scripting Attacks, Session Hijacking and various ways to protect your web application against such attacks.He introduced us to the concept of Defensive coding and also Context Sensitive auto sanitization.
4. Introduction to Programmable Infrastructure by Janakiramm from Amazon :This was the best technical talk ever. We were introduced to the Amazon EC2 service .He introduced to us some of the concepts such as Elastic Block storage and Elastic IP.He stressed on the power of programming integrated with Amazon web service. He programmed in PHP to configure EC2 service,creating instances , assigning a block storage and assigning elastic IP's .
5. PHP Web applications on Windows Azure by Praveen Srivastava of MIcrosoft : In this talk he walked us through various methods of deploying your web applications on Windows Azure (Platform as a service by Microsoft).He also introduced App fabric , web and worker roles etc.

Overall it was a fun experience. :)
